SEND

“Nothing less than positive progress and well-being for all”

Mr Alan Shipman, SENCO, has been part of our school team since September 2020 and is supported by a team of experienced Teaching Assistants and Student Wellbeing Support staff.

What are Special Educational Needs?

‘A child or young person has SEN if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her.

A child of compulsory school age or a young person has a learning difficulty or disability if he or she:

  • has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age,

or

  • has a disability which prevents or hinders him or her from making use of facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools or mainstream post-16 institutions.’ SEND Code of Practice, 2015

A Special Educational Need falls into one of four categories:

  • Communication and Interaction

  • Cognition and Learning

  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health

  • Physical and Sensory

Some children may have needs in multiple categories.

For our students with SEN/D, we will make all reasonable adjustments to accommodate their needs.

Denmark Road High School is committed to providing all the students with high quality education where each student can ‘Discover and Realise’ their potential. We are committed to ensuring that every student receives the very best responsive learning and teaching in the classroom through our expectation of excellence at all times. We hold high aspirations for all of our students within and beyond their classroom.

The SEN/D department sits within the Progress and Wellbeing team, and in a calm, safe
space in the heart of the school. A student with SEN/D is allocated a Lead Practitioner (LP)from the team for as long as is necessary to ensure their needs are being met. As appropriate, the LP supports the student in collaboration with families, pastoral and
academic colleagues, external agencies, and the Local Authority. Students may also need ‘Access Arrangements’ to ensure their experience of exams is
equitable to that of their peers’. This is arranged by the SEN/D team.
